When I first started traveling, I would spend an absurd amount of money on souvenirs. I would get a cheap shot glass or overpriced crew-neck everywhere I went. These things were unoriginal and ended up in my closet or on a shelf, only to be used a few times a year. One day an idea came to me: Why don’t I start buying postcards from my travels? This simple idea turned into a vast collection of postcards with sentimental value. Here is why postcards are the best souvenirs to get when traveling:

Postcards are Cheap

The most I ever paid for a postcard was $1.10 and even that is on the expensive end. Typically postcards range from $0.30 to $0.75 so you won’t break the bank if you get one in every place you visit.

Postcards are Easy to Find

Every souvenir shop has a wide range of postcards for you to choose from. They are not niche items that you need to search multiple places to find. You are guaranteed to be able to find at least one postcard anyplace you travel!

The Possibilities for Creativity are Endless

You are able to design your postcard collection in a way that appeals to your personal aesthetic. For me, I love to write everything I do on the back of the postcard for each place I travel. I store all of my postcards in an old cigar box I got from a beer distributor and display it on a dresser in my room.

(1) You are able to design your postcards in the way that special you! You could mail the postcard to yourself from the place you are visiting, write highlights from the trip, what your favorite moment was, draw a picture, or simply leave the postcard blank. I go a little crazy and end up writing full novels on the back of my postcards.

(2) You are able to store your postcards in unique ways! One option is keep your postcards in a place special to you, such as a box, photo album, or specific drawer. Another option is to keep your postcards on display, such as hanging them on your wall, pinning them to a bulletin board, or placing them on a display shelf. The possibilities are endless!

Tip: If you have already traveled to many places and did not purchase a postcard, you can design your own! I didn’t start collecting postcards until two years ago so I was missing postcards from my early travels. I went to Zazzle and used my own pictures to design the postcards I was unable to collect. Be sure to choose the “semi-gloss” option for your cards.
